GET TO KNOW MONIQUE johnson
Monique is an Events, Marketing and PR strategist who works in the fashion and beauty industry.
At age 17, she hosted a charity fashion show for her hometown raising money for the local thrift shop. She went on to work with Rent the Runway, FiftyTwo45, Sundays Studios, and other startups in the fashion industry.
Monique believes in the beauty of perseverance. She believes everyone has a story to tell and she wants to help people tell it. She was born in a small town in Southern Louisiana. At the age of 9, her goal was to move to New York. Her parents raised her to “do whatever makes me happy.” They never set any limits on how high I can go and she can never thank them enough for that.
In 2019, Monique added the title “writer” under her belt, with a book titled “An Edible Love Letter” being released in December. Monique is also an advocate for sexual assault survivors and mental health.
In her spare time, she enjoys baking, cooking Cajun dishes, sewing and yoga.
What are you passionate about?
Other than fashion design, I would say bringing awareness to colorism. Colorism within the black community has been a serious emotional and psychological battle. I am a dark skinned black woman and I will give birth to a black child. Coming from the south, it is all around you. I’ve experienced it and I will always be apart of the conversation to bring this issue to light. In order to address something, you have to acknowledge it.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
Where I am now— New York City. I guess dreams do come true.
